On Fox News yesterday morning, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich fielded questions related to everything from Afghanistan and healthcare to the Congressional race in upstate New York’s 23rd District. He appeared more than a little uncomfortable when he was asked about Dede Scozzafava’s decision to pull out of the race even though she carried his endorsement. To be fair, she had not announced her endorsement of the Democrat when the interview was taped, but he was certainly not willing to write her off or fully embrace Doug Hoffman as his choice. Instead, he characterized Hoffman as the ONLY choice left to Republicans.
When asked if the NY-23 Race was a sign of growing problems for the GOP, Gingrich was quick to point out that it was merely a result of a strong Conservative Party presence in that district that existed long before this campaign began. When asked about his support for Scozzafava, his response was somewhat interesting. He said she was “very liberal” on some issues, but would have been better than a total liberal Bill Owens. He once again spoke in terms of political practicality and the need to gain seats in Congress at any price. I guess he failed to see the potential of choosing a candidate that actually represented conservative values, even after the “practical” choice had been sent packing. In closing, he again stopped short of an outright endorsement of Hoffman, but reiterated that he was the only choice left for Republicans, because Owens was not an option.
