The Pope is a Tree Hugger?
Catholics everywhere probably never saw this one coming. First the Church opens up to dialog about creation and now it is talking Global Climate Change? Can you say confusing, conflicting, and completely comical? Pope Benedict said Tuesday that “Industrialized nations must recognize their responsibility for the environmental crisis, shed their consumerism and embrace more sober lifestyles.” The Pope is now getting on board for this NOW? Did someone forget to start an email account for the Leader of the Catholic Church so that he could grasp the gravity of the scandal that now surrounds this little inconvenient truth?
American SpectatorSpeaking of the need for all nations to address the issue of energy resources, he said:
“This means that technologically advanced societies must be prepared to encourage more sober lifestyles, while reducing their energy consumption and improving its efficiency.”
“It is becoming more and more evident that the issue of environmental degradation challenges us to examine our lifestyle and the prevailing models of consumption and production, which are often unsustainable from a social, environmental and even economic point of view.”
VATICAN CITY (RNS) Neglect of the natural environment is as great a threat to peace and prosperity as global terrorism, Pope Benedict XVI said in his most extensive ecological statement to date, released by the Vatican on Tuesday (Dec. 15).

Did you just call the Pope a Tree Hugger? A special place in Hell my friend. A special place. I’ll bring the ice.
Yeah I did. I’m not sure that God would necessarily take offense to that. Trees are his creations too. It wouldn’t be an insult to call him a child hugger would it?
Actually don’t answer that.
Ha. Oh you are bad.
I heard this earlier today as well. I was surprised even though I do think its a good thing that the Church is beginning to accept SOME realities of the 21st century Id rather them not start with this one.
I couldnt agree more. I think its great that the Church is taking a more open minded posture regarding science. I think it is mutually beneficial for both parties for science and religion to not remain at odds as if they must be opposing forces. I am simply saddened that this had to be one of the places where they have come together.
