Scott Brown: It’s not the Kennedy seat… It’s the People’s Seat

“It’s not the Kennedy seat. It’s not the Democrat Seat. It’s the People’s Seat.”
Massachusetts Republican Senatorial candidate Scott Brown dropped that one on “moderator” David Gergen last night in a debate with his Democratic opponent Martha Coakley when Gergen asked if he would be willing to sit in “Ted Kennedy’s seat” and vote against the health care bill even if it meant 15 more years before reform was achieved. The response was the definition of ballsy and precisely what needed to be said to the voters of Massachusetts. The result of this special election has been deemed a foregone conclusion for months and Coakley had all but packed the U-Haul before the race tightened in recent weeks with some polls showing Coakley’s lead to have dwindled to as low as three points.
As to Brown’s Republican credentials, this is one of those rare moments where I care not one iota if he is a “moderate” or a “centrist.” Frankly, it doesn’t matter in this race. If he’s not the most liberal senator on the Hill, he’s an improvement. No disrespect to the late Ted Kennedy, but anything would be a step up from there. I mean lets just be honest. This isn’t NY-23 where we had some options (good ones or not). We aren’t ever going to be able to run a “conservative” for this Senate seat. The best we could hope for is another Collins or Snowe that we will loath 95% of the time. Maybe that’s what he is. Maybe it’s not. Do we really have much to lose here when you consider the alternative?
Look. I will never cozy up to moderates – if that is in fact what Brown is. I will never turn my back on them or forget what they truly are – people with situational convictions; but I would certainly cast a vote for one if my only other choice was a super-lib looking to carry on the legacy of Teddy Kennedy. More importantly, Brown is running on a pledge to cast the 41st vote against the health care reform bill. For the power of filibuster, I would vote for a moderate; and prepare myself to deal with the longterm repercussions of such a “victory.” I would venture to guess that a Brown victory will be far less detrimental to the future of this nation than Reid and Pelosi plan if they keep their 60 votes.

As to recent polling numbers for this race, they are all over the charts, but most still show Coakley with a firm lead. Pollster Scott Rasmussen analyzes some of the numbers here.
