Today is the big day… The day that will save this convention from the mediocrity, boredom, and a general sense of blah…
Sarah Palin arrives on the scene today to deliver the much anticipated keynote address for the First “Annual?” Tea Party Convention. Much has been speculated about what she will tell a crowd of 600 – 3000? Some believe she will talk about uniting the party, while others believe she will champion a movement to unseat Republicans across the country that have lost their way. I’m pulling for a combination of the two.
In regards to her remarks, I will not be in the room. In fact, I will not be in attendance. I will be outside covering the scene before and after the banquet but would rather get punched in the face than pay a dime to see this speech. If I am lucky enough to see the speech post-conference I will be eternally grateful – and by that I mean if Judson Phillips isn’t too much of a drity rotten scoundrel to post it on the web or allow a camera in the room then I will gladly have a look…. but I will not pay for it. I thought this whole movement traded on the idea of “Taxation without representation.” What the hell do I get for paying $349 to see Palin speak at a banquet? I say nothing but a $40 meal and an hour of listening to a voice that makes me want to upchuck that $40 meal. I would like to see Andrew Breitbart introduce her, but even he isn’t woth the cost. When I say cost, I hope you don’t think I mean cost as in money because I would gladly pay the tab if I thought it were worth it. In fact, Russ at That’s Right offered to split the cost if I’d just go in. I just can’t do it folks.
Call me a man of principle or just call me an asshole – either way, I’m not paying money to hear someone who is a “woman of the people” address a crowd gathered in the spirit of the American Revolution. What elitist mind trip do you have to be on to overlook how glaringly “retarded” such a concept is even taken from the most openminded and optimistic of perspectives? I know conventions cost money, speakers have expenses, and these things don’t pay for themselves, but seriously, this event could have been staged at the local YMCA as easily as it was at the Opryland Hotel
That being said, I will patiently wait as Palin arrives on the scene. With 3000 rooms in this joint, I am sure I will know the moment she arrives – the vallet I slipped an Andrew Jackson assures me I will be the first to know. Who said I’m not willing to go the extra mile?
Since I plan to be in the fold of the millions, thousands, hundred that will pour in tonight, I will be sending photos to Russ at That’s Right so that he can stream them relatively live to you as he receives them. I loath Twitter so shut up and stop the brain wheels from turning. I’m just not going to do it. Have a look over there and you will see them.
In case you’re wondering. Folks are sleeping in and skipping class around here. Not me since I don’t have the capacity for sleep but for much of the elderly crowd – at least 50% of them are snoozing while the other half is mealing on the continental breakfast. Just so you’re not worried you’re / I am missing something, here’s the schedule for today….

In the weeee hours of last night (mind you its central time here folks which is awesome) I commented on Another Black Conservative’s site in response to Teresa telling her that I was ashamed, shocked, confused by Greta Nation’s characterization of the scene here as a packed house. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not questioning how many people were at previous Tea Party events, but I am saying what I’m not saying…. huh? Packed House? As a native Tennessean I can tell you that they get more people for high school football games around here – when the team is awful. This was no packed house. The restaurants and bars were drastically overstaffed all night to say the least. I guess they had higher expectations than Fox News. Good news for those of us in attendance, we were never waiting on a drink. Bartenders outnumbered us two to one. I call that heaven but some might call that a ghost town. In fairness, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it is in no way more of a stretch than calling this scene a “packed house.”
I’m chalking this one up to bad information given to Greta. She is usually above the fold so I blame those around her.

Excellent post.
I would feel exactly the same in your shoes, and could not pay for this either.
Do they not realize this kind of thing is exactly why the Tea Parties happened?
I really don’t know anymore. I think 9/10 of the attendees are genuine in their motives and here for the right reasons, but I think its that other 10% that hasn’t the slightest clue about the gravity of the weekend. Unfortunately, I think that 10% is pulling the strings around here.
It’s being co-opted.
And what the hell is this from the schedule…?!
“Precinct Organizing Best Practices”-Grow your Organization, Gain Increased Political Clout, and Impact Elections”
Are they getting their talking points from OFA now? Don’t they see we HATE that “Organizing Best Practices” schtick?
Mind you, I am no political expert, but I think these tea partiers are making a mistake in the way they are handling their initial success. This started as a grassroots response to the way our government is handling themselves and our money. What they are doing now seems to contrived and is more focused on making someone a buck. They also seem to be focused on completely doing away with the GOP. That is a major mistake, in my opinion, as doing so will only ensure the Democrats retain complete control over the political process and will lessen our voice even more.
Something else I forgot to mention in my earlier reply, concerning Sarah Palin. I happen to like her, but I do not think she is Presidential material. Regardless of how some people try to build her up, she does not have a command of national issues. Again, I say this as someone who does like her and thinks she can help the conservative cause, but it is not as President. Just my honest opinion.
I’m inclined to agree, and I also like her…
Or rather, I have SO FAR liked her. Right now I’m keeping an eye on her. I question her judgement in this appearance, and I have a HUGE problem with her statements to Greta about “merging” with the Republicican Party.
