NBC Tribute to Black History Month – Fried Chicken and Collard Greens

February 10, 2010
By

Blame it on the snow shutting down Washington or just call it a slow news day, but I’m a little bored with the political world today with so I’ve been checking some backlog and stumbled upon something I’m shocked that I didn’t hear about.  I am truly ashamed that I dropped the ball on this one.

Questlove – the drummer for the band Roots – the house band for the NBC show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon – was strolling into the NBC cafeteria the other day when he saw a sign posting a special menu for the day in honor of Black History Month.  As you can see, it is a bit… well let’s just call it a coincidence stereotypical racist funny as hell.

The picture as you can see is a menu tribute to Black History Month featuring fried chicken, collard greens, black-eyed peas, and jalapeno cornbread.

Questlove’s tweet included this picture and the words “Hmm HR?

More good press for NBC today! At right is a photo snapped and posted on Twitter by Questlove, drummer for the Roots, NBC employee, and leader of the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon band. According to a person tweeting under the handle “nbcu” and purporting to be NBC’s vice-president of communications Kevin Goldman, “The sign in the NBCU cafeteria has been removed. We apologize for anyone who was offended by it.”

Mediaite scored an interview with the cook.  It seems the whole thing was blown way out of proportion and was just an innocent gesture and was not meant to be offensive.  Sounds like 99.9% of the other race-related stories that get blown way out of proportion by the hypocritical entity that allowed this one to go on inside its building, but who am I to judge?  I think 99.9% of the stories reporting “racism” are unwarranted bunk in the first place.

The JRG Blog at Quincy News didn’t miss it and neither did Founding Bloggers – who by the way has full videos available from the Tea Party Convention in Nashville.

Clearly I was MIA all weekend bc I do believe I was the only one that missed this…

Go look at the photo of the full menu at Mediaite. I’ve only eaten soul food a few times but (a) I’m pretty sure that those are all soul food staples, (b) last I checked, soul food was part of black culture, and (c) it is, after all, Black History Month. So the chef decided to serve a soul food meal, but instead of picking something like ribs as the main course, she picked the one entree that’s associated with racist stereotypes. Result: Menu quickly removed and chef, I guess, now deemed a racist. Wonderful.

Via TheGrio.com, here’s a short interview with Leslie Calhoun, the obviously racist/white supremacist chef; like the boss says, if you think the uproar is absurd now, imagine if Calhoun was cooking for Fox News. Quote: “It’s not trying to offend anybody and it’s not trying to suggest that that’s all that African-Americans eat. It’s just a good meal.” Exit question: Does this mean the soul food episode of my favorite show on television is also racist?

You are pulling the race card? I find it ironic that you would post this the same day you make jokes about Reverend Al Sharpton visiting the White House to discuss job creation for minorities. A white republican getting worked up over this. I will be laughing all night.

Oh come on Ned. No one’s pulling the race card around here. I was simply pointing out that its a bit funny that the president would tap Sharpton to work on job creation since his only real job is stirring shit up.

Stirring shit up? That appears to be YOUR job T., and you do a damn good job of it don’t you? Not really, as I really don’t see who in their RIGHT minds would take you serious at all. You are like Anne Coulter, WAY to the right, extremism… to the extreme… nth degree extreme. You are like one of these people that are on the brink of getting on top of rooftops, etc etc. Relax, sometimes democrats do do good things, give it time. I know, to you, their very existence is a bad thing… feelings mutual. Though you do provide plenty of humorous moments and some heated debate, of which can always be useful in life.
