No Snow For Olympics, Too Much Snow Down Here, and a Couple of Really Hot Olympians

February 10, 2010
By

Vonn is one of several Olympians to pose for Sports Illustrated's annual swimsuit issue.

With the Winter Olympics just days away and no snow on the ground – or in sight for that matter – organizers are pulling out all stops to find a bit of the white stuff while much of Our East Coast is blanketed with more than it can handle.  I don’t know if it is the lack of snow, a general indifference toward the Winter Olympics, or the “controversy” surrounding “global warming” stealing the thunder, but it really doesn’t seem like the Winter Games are just around the corner.  Where’s the buzz?  Where’s the excitement?  Its time to generate some some national pride and overblown and overzealous support for your country people.

Since the games seem to be going entirely unnoticed, I thought I would showcase the finer side of what the Winter Olympics has to offer – at least from an American perspective – to see if we can get people excited about our quadrennial opportunity to stick it to the Russians in sports they invented – and a Canadian or two just for good measure.

On a not-so-related front…  I am thoroughly enjoying the commentary this week as Vancouver is struggling to fill the slopes and DC looks like Aspen in the peak season.  Global warming enthusiasts don’t know whether to claim the snow or point to the empty slopes.  I sure am glad they changed that “global warming” thing to “climate change” before the weather started going all haywire… PS.. did you hear that global warming caused an earthquake in Chicago?

NY Daily News:  Opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics are just 5 days away — and the relatively balmy weather gripping British Columbia has some worried a lack of white stuff might throw a wrench in the games.

“When I got off the airplane it was like, ‘What’s this green grass doing here? This is the Winter Olympics,’” Trevor Marsicano, an American speed skater told the Associated Press. “For me it’s nice, because I’m used to, like, zero-degrees. This is awesome.”

Organizers have been touting the Vancouver Olympics as “The Green Games,” but the soggy swath of mud at Cypress Mountain has some locals calling them “The Brown Games.”

The mountain is the planned site of both the snowboarding and freestyle skiing contests.

In recent weeks teams have been hauling in snow by truck and helicopter. Their efforts will be put to the test Monday when training sessions for freestyle mogul skiing kick off.

“It’s not so much the warm weather; it’s the wind that does the most damage,” John Furlong, of the local organizing group VANOC, told the Associated Press.

“We may get help from Mother Nature, but we’re not counting on it. The team is calculating what they have to do. The effort for the past 10 days has been super human. They’ve moved an extraordinary amount of snow.”

AOL News:  WASHINGTON (Feb. 10) — It’s snowing like it’s 1899.

The whiteout that has crippled Washington for the second time in a weekbroke a record that had stood since the winter of 1898-99. By early afternoon, 54.9 inches had fallen on the capital, burying a record for the snowiest winter since record-keeping began in 1888, a high of 54.4 inches set before the turn of the last century.

To the north, where the brunt of Wednesday’s blizzard was felt, Baltimore also broke its record for the snowiest winter ever. It registered 65.6 inches just before noon, busting the previous record, from 1995-96, of 62.5 inches.

AND ON TO THE FINER SIDE OF SNOW AND THE LACK THERE OF…

A few of this great nation’s incredible winter athletes were featured in this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.  A fitting tribute to a few rather attractive ladies who are also incredible athletes.  While some think their very presence in the magazine is a slap in the face to women everywhere, I think those women need to find something better to do with their time than judge a bunch of other women who have spent their lives conditioning their bodies and honing their skills.  For all those bitter women out there that think they are selling out their sports or shaming the female population… I would ask you just one question… How many people (men and women) would give a damn about ariel skiing if it weren’t for Lacy Schnoor (24 year old aerial skier from Salt Lake City, Utah)?  ”Selling out their sport” or promoting it?  Is Mark Sanchez shirtless on the cover of GQ because he’s a Pro Bowler?  I think not.  Get a clue feminists.

How awesome is this girl?

Or the girl that started it all… Lindsey Vonn

The photo shoot and the treatment in Sports Illustrated have set a few feminists into action…  Here’s one particularly enraged female – from an “academic perspective” of course…

Now Public

Some have critiqued Sports Illustrated in the way the magazine sexualizes women, especially female athletes. A case in point is  Lindsey Vonn’s most recent cover for Sports Illustrated. It depicts her bent over on her skies with dramatic mountains as the backdrop.

Dr. Nicole LaVoi studies the roles of Women in sport and she recently made this observation to the Vancouver Sun

“When females are featured on the cover of SI, they are more likely than not to be in sexualized poses and not in action–and the most recent Vonn cover is no exception,” she said.

“Picture this as a way to frame what I’m trying to get at: Picture a male ski racer in a similar pose on the cover of SI, smiling at the camera. Would we see that? How would you react to that picture, verses the picture of Vonn?”

“LaVoi takes an academic approach to backing her argument, claiming researchers have shown, over the last 60 years only about four per cent of all SI covers have portrayed women.”

Is There anything more all-American than this girl?

Sexist?  Ha… Okay maybe a little on this last one…  that’s Brooklyn Decker.  She’s the cover girl of this year’s issue.  Sadly, she is also married to tennis pro Andy Roddick…

Or This….????

I rest my case….

Apparently American Power caused quite a stir with his posting of similar photos…  The Daley Gator aimed to solve the problem…
