You have to love coming across stories like this. I know I did. Newly elected Justice to the Supreme Court Elena Kagan sitting in a crowded room full of potential jurors after being summoned for jury duty… Priceless.
Justice Elena Kagan was spotted among a crowd of prospective jurors huddled in a waiting lounge this morning at D.C. Superior Court.
Sporting dark trousers and a checkered patterned sweater jacket, she sat quietly, reading through what appeared to be a legal brief and making handwritten notes in the margin.
As of this writing, she hasn’t been called to step forward and fulfill her civic duty. But if she does make it through voir dire — the questioning of potential jurors on their backgrounds and biases — she would have a few free days to sit for a trial.
The Supreme Court does not return to the bench to hear oral arguments until the end of February.
UPDATE, 2:19 pm ET: All the remaining jurors have been released, including Kagan. She was seen chatting warmly with a handful of people who recognized her. Then, Kagan dropped her plastic badge in the trash can and left the courthouse without stopping to collect her $5 for service.
