Palin strung together an off-the-cuff explanation of the famed Midnight Ride for those listening that seemed to involve a ton of noise, bells, gunfire, and a warning that the British were out to take away Americans’ as-yet-nonexistent Second Amendment rights, which Baldwin couldn’t help but react to with deer-in-the-headlights confusion. “History lesson from Sarah Palin on the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,” she deadpanned.
I’m not gonna lie. This was pretty funny – both the ridiculous “historical” account and the CNN anchor’s reaction. I’m sure many on my side of things will be upset that I’m not outraged, but if they were watching Fox News instead of CNN and this was Joe Biden and not Sarah Palin, they’d think this was hilarious. Either I’m just a fan of this sort of “comedy” or they need to work on developing that sense of humor.
I mean come on. Is that the way you heard the story in history class?
What this “story” demonstrates is what I was talking about here… when I said Palin’s bus tour was risky business for the Former Governor. The MSM’s not going to report on Palin events where she says nothing; or even something brilliant. But make no mistake about it; they’re going to report every single one of them where she says something like this.

[...] Will someone please just ask him to hand in the keys and turn off the lights on his way out already? I’m really getting tired of following this story. Being able to include the word “weiner” in my titles was fun for about a day; maybe two, but this is getting ridiculous. Come on Congressman. Either come out with the real story or just get the hell out of town, and let the rest of us go back to following the important stuff like Sarah Palin eating pizza with Donald Trump or the Former Governor sharing the story of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride. [...]
Believe it or not, Palin is right. The British were coming to take the armory at Concord, and once the initial three riders had completed their ride, the towns were alerted with bells, guns and drums by other men and riders. Revere may have had the lanterns lit in the church (he was doing the signalling, not receiving it) but others did the work just as she said, for the reason given.
The Longfellow poem, while beloved, is mostly wrong.
Thanks for the comment Milo. I do appreciate it. You might have noticed in the post that I didn’t attempt to correct or revise Palin’s historical analysis. I didn’t make the attempt because I’m not sure she was intending to be historically accurate. What I did reference was the “story told in history class.” I “think” that was the one she was shooting for, but I don’t know that even a very generous accounting of her version resembled even that.
I wasn’t knocking Gov Palin for not knowing that other tellings of Paul Revere’s Ride were out there; I was laughing my tail off at how she fumbled through her version like a crazy uncle telling war stories – all the key/cool and exiting words and little to nothing else. I found it funny – just like I find crazy uncles funny. I don’t see it as a major blow to Gov Palin or her credibility, but as I said in the piece; I think it demonstrates the danger of her continuing on with this bus tour. Even a non-publicity tour is going to generate a fair amount of publicity – good and bad – when her name’s on the side of the bus.
The woman is an idiot. But, all of America knows that…we’re juts suprised when her idiocy takes her to new heights.
Revere, never used “Bells”. WTF did she get that? he was on a secret mission to warn of the invasion and he sure as hell didn’t use bells or even scream out “The British are coming!”, either. And Revere was actually a very small actor in that event.
he was British. Everyone was British at that time so that wouldn’t even make sense.
I have no idea what this idiot was trying to say. My only guess is she read it from a Texas High School text book or something equally fraudulent.
Bachmann/Trump 2012!
Does anyone really take Palin seriously? She is a joke.
