New Jersey Governor Chris Christie – an outspoken Mitt Romney supporter – made an appearance on Meet the Press with David Gregory Sunday and weighed in on Governor Romney’s decision to release his two most recent tax returns and the South Carolina Republican Primary that went down as a win for Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and not the perceived front-runner Mitt Romney.
To his credit, Christie is the consummate surrogate in every regard. He’s tough when and where he needs to be and he provides cover when cover is necessary. In a matter of less than two minutes, Christie explained Romney’s tax reservations as if the matter was settled. For Romney’s sake, I hope he was paying attention.
He was willing to concede that last night was a “bad night” and last week was a “bad week for the campaign.” A disappointing loss, indeed.
There was, of course, also the obligatory question of whether or not he’d consider joining a Romney ticket in the VP slot – to which Christie again responded with a somewhat calculated denial. He even went so far as to defend his past statement about “not being ready to be president” by saying that he really only meant that he wasn’t ready to leave the New Jersey Governorship. Sounds to me like someone’s worried that line will be used against him down the road when he’s forced to answer a “heart beat away from the presidency” questions. Stay tuned…
