That Seems Fair: Obama Mural Painted on Wall in Philadelphia Polling Station; Posters in Florida; Black Panthers in Philly; Mural Ordered “Covered”

I made my rounds this morning here in Tennessee checking out the local polling stations and gauging turnout.  The Volunteer State’s anything but a swing state, so the only real excitement for me was not having to wait in line.  That’s obviously not the case around the country as a few contested states seemed determined to provide enough excitement to satisfy even those of us here in fly-over country.

Philadelphia’s certainly brought the A-Game.  (Via Drudge)

A Pennsylvania judge issued an order Tuesday to reinstate Republican election officials across Philadelphia who allegedly were ejected or refused entry by on-site Democratic voting chief judges.

One Republican official claimed that “just under 70″ Republican election officials were blocked from Philadelphia polling sites Tuesday morning by Democrats on site. One of them, the official claimed, “was shoved out of the polling place.”

“For this many inspectors to be ejected from polling places is rare, even for Philadelphia,” the official told

It was one of several controversies surfacing in Pennsylvania’s largest city on Election Day.

One polling site in Philadelphia apparently had a mural of President Obama emblazoned on the wall directly behind the voting machines. The mural, at a local school being used as a polling site, contained the words “change!” and “hope,” along with a quote from the president.

Republicans were drawing attention to the image Tuesday morning, with one Mitt Romney spokesman tweeting: “Voters in Philly’s Ward 35 are being forced to cast their ballots next to this.”

“It is an absolute disgrace,” said Shannon Royer, deputy secretary for external affairs and elections in Pennsylvania. “Election materials and electioneering inside the polling place are prohibited by state law. This can be interpreted as trying to influence voters inside the polling place. I am told discussions are going on now about covering the mural.”

Pennsylvania election law states “no person within a polling place may electioneer or solicit votes for any political party, political body, or candidate, nor may any unauthorized written or  printed materials be posted within the polling place.”

T-shirts, hats, and pins endorsing candidates are off limits, but a big ass mural’s kosher?

That’s what I get for thinking small.

I guess Floridians were a little upset about Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin… stealing their spotlight.

This should help.

Again, hats, pins, t-shirts not okay; posters hanging on the wall, okay.

Ridiculous (2); Common Sense (0)

Oh, but Philadelphia is making a comeback.

Remember these guys from the last go-round?

I know its not the most PC thing to say or ask, but I can’t help but wonder what the reaction would be if the Klan was opening doors at polling stations?  I know its “racist” to compare the New Black Panther Party to the KKK, but since both groups help empower racist evil bigots, I really don’t give a damn.  A duck is a duck is a duck.

Just in case you were wondering how that mural went over in PA…

CBS:  Local Republicans went to court to have a judge order a mural of President Obama covered up at the Ben Franklin Elementary School polling place in the Northeast Philadelphia.

Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Rob Gleason released the following statement regarding the Republican Party of Pennsylvania’s successful challenge.

“The Obama campaign is 0-for-2 today in trying to get away with their disgusting attempts to suppress Republican voices in Philadelphia,” Chairman Rob Gleason said. “Whether it’s blocking Republican Election Day workers form doing their job or violating Pennsylvania law by electioneering in the polling place, it is clear the Obama campaign has taken their campaign in the gutter to manipulate this election however they can.  Based on the Obama campaign’s behavior today, it certainly raises the question: what are Democrats doing in the polls that they are working so hard to shield folks from monitoring this election?”

The Judge of Elections in this district says the mural has been there for several years and it was an oversight.

That had to make you laugh.  Since its from CBS, I am reluctant to call that the finished product.  Given their track record, they may wait until tomorrow to release the actual photos.

Here’s my favorite part of the story – other than the fact that they left up the quote and moved what look like actual election materials to cover the president’s face.

“The Judge of Elections in this district says the mural has been there for several years and it was an oversight.”

The mural has been there “for several years”??????

Dude’s been in office for just under four.  Did a PA school just get ahead of the trend and start plastering Obama’s face on walls when he was still a one-term senator from Illinois?
