US Soccer has finally released field level video highlights its hexagonal-concluding match with Panama. The USMNT pulled out a last second victory in stoppage time spoiling the Panamanian’s World Cup dreams. On balance, that’s probably not entirely accurate. While the USMNT certainly deserves credit for pulling off a W on the road, Panama completely mailed it in and more than deserved the fate that ultimately awaited them.
US Soccer and head coach Jurgen Klinsmann released the roster for the February 29 international friendly with Italy Thursday; and while they are not many surprises to speak of, the inclusion of one new name will certainly give some a new sense of optimism that the relatively dormant attack may have finally found a spark – Terrence Boyd. The Borussia Dortmund striker has yet to break through with the super-club, but has lit up competition while featuring with the U-23′s. Google the kid if you want a taste. Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake). Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo), Timmy Chandler (Nürnberg), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Michael Parkhurst (FC Nordsjaelland), Jonathan Spector (Birmingham City). Michael Bradley (Chievo Verona), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Jose Torres (Pachuca), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim). Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), Terrence Boyd (Borussia Dortmund), Edson Buddle (LA Galaxy), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)
US Men’s National Team Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann has named 20 players to the January camp roster to prepare for international friendlies with Venezuela and Panama on January 21 and 25 respectively. The player pool is loaded with fresh faces and Klinsmann is selling the camp and the subsequent matches as an opportunity to find some depth to add to what seems like a relatively established starting 11.
Landon Donovan, the face of American soccer for much of the last decade, has asked for and been granted permission to pass on a camp invitation for an upcoming international friendly with former World Champion France so he can train with his LA Galaxy teammates in preparation for November 20th’s MLS Cup Final. Unconfirmed reports say Donovan may still be nursing a nagging quad injury, but it’s probably more likely that Landon realized a trip abroad for a Friday match and a Saturday return could have potentially done a number on his fitness. That said, nine days is still a fairly long time to recover from jet lag.
The United States Men’s National Team is set to play World Cup Champion and world number one Spain in a friendly today in Foxborough, so needless to say; my attention for the day will not be given to politics. If you’re a soccer fan, be sure to tune in. Kickoff’s at 4:30 ET. And if you’re not, game of this magnitude is always a good place to start. There is nothing more exhilarating than getting the chance to cheer on the Red, White, and Blue…. And if not, here’s some politics you miserable fool…
US midfielder Stuart Holden was injured playing with his club side Bolton in a match with Manchester United. The video is posted below via the Sports Insider. You can see from the clip that the extent of the injury is really up in the air at this point. While there is no official report as of yet, Holden just Tweeted “Thanks for all the messages of support, will keep everyone updated when I find out the extent of injury.”
